Job posted by The Kaghan Memorial Trust

Primary School Teachers, foothills of the Himalayas, Pakistan

The Kaghan Memorial Trust (KMT) is a non-profit charitable organisation that is currently establishing the first of a number of schools providing free quality primary education for underprivileged children in Pakistan.

KMT is currently recruiting experienced teachers and educationalists to work on a volunteer basis at its Kaghan Memorial School (KMS) in the Kaghan Valley, Northern Pakistan. We are looking for qualified female professionals to fill these positions at earliest possible date (preferably March/April 2012) with a commitment to work with us for the period of one entire year. The main responsibilities of these teachers will include:
•Developing and delivering daily lesson plans for the lessons assigned to them;
•Working with, and supervising, the KMS local teaching team to ensure that lessons are delivered and assessed according to the vision of the school, the curriculum, and in line with modern teaching practices;
•Providing training and support for the local teachers working at KMS through careful monitoring of teacher performance, teacher training days, teacher performance interviews and recommendations of teaching methodologies;
•Developing and improving the KMS curriculum;
•Organising events and activities at KMS for the students and staff, e.g. Medical Camp, Sports Day and Annual Day;
•Performing administrative duties related to classroom management such as inventorying of supplies, maintenance of class lists, student assessment and reports;
•Close communication with Head Office – writing student and teacher profiles, newsletter articles and support of fundraising initiatives;
•Contributing to the constant evolution and development of the School by working as part of the Senior Teacher and Academic Advisor (STA) Team to develop initiatives to reduce absenteeism, improve health and hygiene, encourage good manners, increase awareness of environmental issues and protection and improve the overall contributions that the School makes to the educational and social development of the students.

Applicants will need to have a college degree and experience teaching children and/or teaching English as a second language. Experience overseas will be an asset. Fluency in Urdu is not a necessity as KMS international teachers are supported in their classrooms by local teachers and teaching assistants who act as interpreters when required. It is essential that the candidate has a strong sense of commitment to the Trust’s objectives and is willing to volunteer to work for KMT for at least one full year. The applicant should also be able to readily adapt to different cultures.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals wishing to bring a real and sustainable difference to a severely deprived community. It will also allow the volunteer to experience a rich, incredibly beautiful, and frequently misunderstood part of the world. It is a fantastic opportunity for development studies graduates to gain essential grass roots experience in education.

The Trust provides its volunteers with accommodation, meals, one return air ticket per year for travel between their home country and Islamabad, visa expenses, local health cover, local transport facilities and a monthly stipend of Pak. Rs. 10,000 (approx US $112) to cover incidental expenses.

Interested candidates may apply by writing to Mr. Khurram Khan, Managing Trustee KMT at volunteer@kmt.org.pk. All applications should be accompanied by a covering letter, a detailed resume, a photo and a copy of your passport. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.

Further details about the School and the Trust can be found at our website: www.kmt.org.pk
